Dig deeper at SERNEC, a consortium of southeastern herbaria.
This is a tiny floating plant with flattened stems (fronds), which are fairly thick and purplish below. Note that the former S. oligorrhiza, now named Landoltia punctata, is an exotic species. Its fronds have 2-7 roots and each is elliptical (1.5-3x long as wide), whereas S. polyrrhiza has 7-21 roots per frond and has a rounded frond less than 1.5x long as wide. Learn more at Vascular Plants of North Carolina.
The largest of the "duckweeds" (Landoltia, Lemna, Spirodela, Wolffia, Wolffiella). Read more in Weakley's Flora.

If a search such as "Carex leptalea var. leptalea" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "Carex leptalea".
Or, to minimize chances of a misspelling, try just "Carex le".
Less is more: If "pencil flower" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "pencil".
